    Thanks James,

I have added two short video clips that the missions team might want to use. I am not sure if the format is right, it says it is converting them?

  • Ann Dunagan

Sure James! Let me put something together. -Ann
  • Ann Dunagan

Ok James. I just wrote a blog post to answer your question, and added a portion of a recent interview that applies to the topic. It's entitled "Inspire Your Kids (& Kid's Church) for Missions"

    James,

Thanks for letting people know about the free Mission-Minded Child/Family offer. So far, I've had about 20 people from MON respond. The packets are all packed and ready to go. I'm excited to propose this idea for mentoring families for missions, and just wanted to express my gratitude!

I am computer novice thus unable to know how to do these fancy systems. How do I send an email to you, James Nored.
  • Chris Chappotin

I know Jason from Twitter..., in fact now that I think about it, I'm starting to know a lot of people from Twitter that I've never met face to face!

Thanks for helping get the word out about the MM Podcast. We just recorded "Episode 11" tonight, and I'm editing right now. I'll get you something soon. For now, the best iTunes link would be: http://bit.ly/hgzxOs. Otherwise, www.sermon.net/missionalmonks is good, too.

Hey James! I really liked the video! You guys really did a great job with it, and with all of the others!!

Thats a good question James. I am sponsored by an established church, Remmel Church, as their urban minister. I was mentored and trained by Dr. Anthony Wood from River City Ministry in North Little Rock to carry this work forward. It was handed to me with 5 people meeting in an apartment for Sunday services. Remmel has about 12 volunteers that have created an outreach ministry that has significantly helped the church plant to get up on its feet. Now that has turned into "The Crossroads Church" since it is in the Crossroads Housing Projects. The goal is to carry this church plant forward and allow God to raise up ministry leaders from the neighborhoods God has sent us to. The end result is not to "do church" for them forever. I'm trying to work myself out of the picture through deep discipleship and leadership development. A lot easier said than done. When they step up in leadership it will free me up to go start this again nearby and still remain close to this congregation. I am seeking any Bible studies or leadership development material that will engage "below the surface." I am interested in learning more about "the story of redemtion" that you use. Can you tell me more about what it covers and how it works?

Gave a handout with your Missional Outreach Network listed at the Tulsa Workshop last week. Keep up the good work.

James, thanks for the guidance and for this interesting digital gathering place you've helped create.  In order to be a good husband to my wife, a former criminal prosecutor in NYC, I should ask if you have a privacy policy.  While I have nothing to hide here, I would like to know in advance if search engines will be flagging my activity here.  I have stayed off of Facebook up until now, even with its ministry and relational opportunities, because of my wife's work on identity theft cases.  Thanks in advance, Tim

  • Sharon Dunlap

I have stayed off facebook as well for that reason but do enjoy hearing the good news of Christian works.

James, right now I'm talking on an individual level. I have several team members at work who I share the story of Jesus with and what He has done and offers us all. I start every work day by praying to God thanking Him for his love, grace and forgiveness. I then dedicate everything I do each night to God and do everything in the name of Jesus Christ. It has helped me stay focused all night on what I am doing, why, and for whom I'm doing it! It helps me control my thoughts, language and actions. I find myself going out of my way to serve, remembering that my Master was the greatest servant of all! I had a young woman shout out to me,"hey Mr.Smiley! Why are you always smiling and so happy"? It gave me a great opportunity to tell her about Jesus Christ and the "good news" gospel! It felt so great to share Jesus with her! After I left her to go on about my job, I immediately prayed to God, thanking Him for answering my prayer to use me in His service! I know He lead me to this young woman! She told me she had been praying a lot lately and felt like she was sent over to my department to meet me! She had been having a lot of trouble at home with family members and is truly searching. I am talking to so many people now who all tell me basically the same thing, they believe in God but do not go to church. I want to study further with them and share God's plan of salvation to them.
  • Kenneth Ray Rayborn

Hi James! How can I join your Missional Outreach when I live in Illinois and you all are in Texas? Is the idea to start up new outreaches somehow? I am very interested in your ideas on this subject and any suggestions. I want to get my wife,my three daughters with their husbands as well as myself more involved in reaching out to the community and sharing Christ with them while serving them! Thank you so much! You have been a real shot in the arm for me personally!

  • Kenneth Ray Rayborn

Your suggestions are exactly what I've been doing! I had a coworker stop me tonight and tell me his mother has cancer! I asked him what her name was and started writing it down on my clipboard I carry to collect data at work. The look on his face said it all! He was surprised my my genuine concern for his mother and him. He hesitated for a split second and said,"Thank you! that would be so nice." I explained to him that I have a prayer list that I am constantly adding too and I would be praying for him too and he said thank you. As we parted I just prayed to God, thanking Him for sending me to this hurting individual and let me continue to find ways to serve him and share my story about why I care for others, what Christ has done for me and  to me!

I look at my job at Toyota as my "mission field"  and you have reaffirmed this by how close your suggestions mirror what I am already doing!  God Bless you!

  • Kenneth Ray Rayborn

I forgot to tell you, I am getting ready to order your material and can't wait to get it in my hands, absorbing it and start using it! Thank you! God bless!
  • Kenneth Ray Rayborn

We were not at Tulsa this year. It's been quite a few years since we've been there! I miss it and told my wife I would have loved to been able to arrange the time off work to have gone. I wanted to see what new books I could buy for my library! I love Jim McGuiggan's books and own several of them. I miss seeing Marvin Phillips and all the other great gospel preacher's like the late G.P.Holt and Albert Hill, who I went with to Antigua years ago to help the church there. I even made wooden pews for the services and lead singing. I still remember his simple but powerful way of presenting the Gospel to the Antiguan's! Lord willing, I will be at Tulsa next year! I hope you will be too! I can't wait to meet you and talk to you about Christ and His mission for us!

Thanks for the welcome, James. I haven't been to any Renovare' conferences. I was introduced to Richard Foster and Dallas Willard through the spiritual formation curriculum at Christ Community Church in Leawood, KS, where we attended prior to moving to Cheyenne. I look forward to engaging here.

  • Andy Catsimanes

Thank you for the group recommendation. We were fortunate enough to have participated in the curriculum development at our church in Leawood, and look forward to contributing at our new church in Cheyenne. We have some very talented teachers here too. Dallas Willard spoke at our church in Leawood a couple of times. One of my goals is to attend the Renovare' Spiritual Formation Institute in 2013.
  • Christopher B. James

I haven't made it to the dissertation phase yet. But this is what I proposed in my application:

Two rising streams within Western Christianity seem to be flowing in opposite directions. Missional ecclesiology and spiritual formation are significantly shaping the course of the Christian church but they are rarely understood as tributaries of the same great river, whose vitality depends upon their fusion. Thus, missional ventures without spiritual currents dry up and spiritual formation efforts stagnate when disconnected from the missio dei. My interest in a PhD in Practical Theology, with a concentration in Mission and Evangelism and a minor in Spirituality, is in drawing these divergent movements into conversation, through a robust academic research project and an applied ecclesiological framework characterized by missional and formational practices in vital symbiosis.

James, I don't recall our meeting. I believe you did make connections recently with Ron Holland, one of my co-workers at the Pepperdine lectures.

For about 5 years, I've serve at The Hills as Neighborhood Connections minister. We've emphasized joining community partners with whom The Hills Jesus-followers could serve. We've looked especially at those who that offer the possibility of relationships/friendships forming. This has led us to specific missional/incarnational actions among the poor, homeless, hungry, children, widow, single parent moms, apartment families, etc.

Our big discovery has been the kingdom awareness learned by intentionally walking in the way of Jesus among the people with whom he chose to spend so much of his time. With his own disciples, Jesus continually took them to the kind of places and people that had his followers step out of their comfort zone. Jesus consistently trusted that process.

What led you down the missional track? Where have you uncovered megachurches with a growing missional approach?

    Hi James,

following is the message I sent to Ty, the camp director at Camp Deer Run, this morning.

Thanks for taking care of my two boys this week!  They had a great time!  Sam's friend Garrett Mcpherson was baptized at camp this morning!  That is very exciting news!  Sam invited Garrett to cdr 4 years ago, and he has been coming back with him ever since.  Garrett's parents do not go to church, but by his second time at cdr he came home telling his Mom that he wanted to be a preacher!  I am very proud that my Sam was used as a vessel to bring Garrett to Christ!  You have a very special camp...God is doing wonderful and amazing things there!

    James

The comment you left for Donald came to me. Just wanted to let you now.

  • Sherri Veach

I am open to anything. The thing you should know about me is I am a work-a-bee. Tell me were I am needed and what needs to be done. Big or small makes no difference to me.

Bryan Sharp mentioned the work the church needs to have done next week. I did not caught the time. Can you let me know?

  • Kelly Weatherford

James we are doing great. Trying to settle into summer and then start back to work again in a couple of days. I teach ESY for my friends in the summer. Thanks for the getting me connected.

Thanks, James.  I am trying to add a photo but it is not uploading when I hit the Save button at the bottom of the screen.  The picture is under the size limit so I do not know why it is not uploading.

Thank you for the invite.  Hope you and your family are having a great week!

    James,

Your message this morning made me think about the time I know God instantly answered my prayer. My husband passed away on May 28, 1999. ( Warren and I married in 2003 ) He had a daughter from his first marriage who was 16 when he died. She came to Plano so we could go through his things. I had the bright idea of having a garage sale. It was my first and last one. I was so angry with God for taking my husband I screamed at him every day. I told him I still loved him but I was very mad at him.

The first day of the sale went well. That night we had one of those June storms. The next day my step daughter and I got every thing ready for the last day of the sale. An hour passed by and not a single person showed up. Before getting ready for the second day I went and got us breakfast. I noticed that the storm the night before had destroyed the sign showing where the sale was. After an hour and a half I decided to go to a store very close by so I could make more signs. My step daughter was 16 at the time and I was very afraid to leave her by herself. I went to the back of the garage and started my conversation with God. I ask him to please what over Maureen while I ran to the store. I also promised him that if he would bring people to the sale I would quite yelling at him.

As I was putting the sign in to the ground showing people where to come to the sale 5 cars passed me. I pulled in behind the fifth car and followed them to my garage. Many more people came that day and we actually closed the garage sale down early.

I know this story does not sound like a really big deal. The state of mind I was in at the time it was my miracle. I know God watched over me and Maureen that day more than he does on the average day. He knew how bad I needed him and he was there. And yes, I quite screaming at him. I thanked him for being there for me and Maureen. I told him I was still mad at him but at least I was no longer screaming.

  • Sherri Veach

Thanks James. I was told by some one in a very loving way the only thing worse than loosing a spouse is loosing a child. I do not wish either on any one. My step daughter who is now 28 and I remain very close. She loves Warren as well. It took some time but I finally came to the place of knowing that God had other plans for me that no longer included Patrick.

He gave me a huge blessing in Warren. When I hear people who are bitter about a failed relationship I always thank God for blessing me with two wonderful men.

Hi James, you asked about my "interest in outreach and mission". My interest was to connect with Miguel Labrador. One of the other members of a house church put me on to Miguel. I looked at some of his writings and wanted to follow up on his question "Have you personally ever taught all of Christ's commands to another person?". Like you, I wonder if he has "all of the commands of Jesus listed systematically". This is my 1st encounter with "missional outreach" and some of the information looks promising, but I'm not sure how it will play out. The initial posting was on 12/28/10. This was followed by two comments on the same day, then nothing until my comment on 07/24/11. If Miguel hasn't answered you, I suspect that he won't answer me.

We are good, James!  I'll try to figure out how to do a picture soon!  We miss you guys and hope things are going well for you!

I worked for an Assemblies of God church in the suburban Milwaukee area for about 13 years and almost three years ago, I stepped down to start a church in what is called the "Lake Country" area which is basically the northwest corner of Waukesha County (the country just west of Milwaukee).  Our church is called "Sanctuary Church of the Lake Country."  We're a small fellowship; we've met in a local school at times, but mostly we meet in our house.  We've been blessed to have teamed up with SHALOM Ministries to put on several outreaches to the community.  Learning how to function as a missional community is of great interest to me, so I hope I can learn from all who are a part of this online community.
  • Carol Stites

I live in corpus christi,tx.not st.paul.if you're getting any thing else it's wrong..I liked your site because it shows God at work.I was very moved seeing 6 people baptized at one time.I love the Lord and anyway we as christian can spread the word the better,Everything Good works for God...Keep up the good work.
  • Robert Condly

For my church and me, I think this is going to be time to learn about the particular form of missional community the Lord wants for us.  I'm getting information about different ministries and each style of being missional has its strong points, but as far as what God specifically wants for us, I'm not 100% sure.  In general, I can say that I'm looking at how a church can function missionally in a middle- to upper-class suburban environment.  The people where we live have traditional understandings of what church looks like and what it does, so to depart dramatically from that culture makes us something of an oddball.  However, the Lord has blessed our efforts to give to the community and over time, we're starting to be relied upon by the residents for at least one annual outreach.  (We team up with SHALOM Ministries, another missional community, to provide free food, entertainment, and a gospel presentation at Hartland's annual Independence Day parade.)
  • Robert Condly

I just discovered today (October 14) that you had put in a friend request to me back on September 18.  I thought that I had already responded to that  back when I first joined this blog community, but perhaps not.  At any rate, I'm sorry for the delay, brother.  I thought we were already "friends!"  Well, I clicked "accept," so now we are!
  • Robert Condly

Whatever you have online (your dissertation, an article about your research, a summary, etc.), I'd love to read.  It sounds like your research is quite relevant for where we're at.
  • Matthew Kratz

    Hi James:

I am a Pastor in Everton ON. I just got a copy of "The Road to Missional" from Baker for review.  Earlier I reviewed: "What Is the Mission of the Church? by Kevin DeYoung. @http://www.librarything.com/work/11652039/reviews/79460956.

It was an excellent dialogue on "Mission", and worth a read.

  • Matthew Kratz

Everton is an independent evangelical Church.

It would be hard to describe the " missional conversation ". Most of the conversations are like trying to grab a cloud. It has been so individually defined, that it is hard to classify.

  • Matthew Kratz

In response to your question, DeYoung and Gilbert do not reject social justice as being a part of mission.

-p. 21 "We are concerned that good behaviors are sometimes commended but in the wrong categories. For example, many good deeds are promoted under the term social justice, when we thing "loving your neighbor" is often a better category...

Chapter 6 is entitled "Making Sense of Social Justice" and is 20 pages of dealing with texts like Lev. 19:9-18, Lev. 25, Isa. 1, Isa. 58, Jer. 22, Amos 5, Micah 6:8, Mt. 25:31-46, Lk. 10:25-37, Lk 16:19-31, 2 Cor. 8-9and James 1, 2, 5.

Chapter 7, deals with the application of the doctrines of chapter 6, including helpful reminders like "Appropriate the Concept of Moral Proximity": The closer the need, the greater the moral obligation to help (2 Cor. 8-9, Gal. 610; 1 tim. 5:8, 1 Jn. 3:17)
