Last month, Linda Hardin forwarded me an email from a school nurse in our area. The nurse at the school said they had a second grader who was very big for her age, that she only had two outfits, and they were full of holes and too small. I told her I would see what we had. I went up to the Clothes Closet and looked. We had nothing in her size! We had quite a collection of books at the Clothes Closet that I took to Half-price books, but that only got me $12.00. I called Deneen Christian, and explained the situation, and she told me that this sounded like a child that the "children's helping children" fund could help! I went to JCPenney because I knew they had a section of plus size children's clothes. The staff at Penneys were great! They were so excited about helping with this cause, and it enheartened them to know that people still cared! They took the tax exemption number, and gave us a 20% discount on top of the clearance prices. I was able to purchase 16 items of clothing, which included jackets, socks and underware, for $137. I was very careful to make sure the pieces could mix and match to provide a full, and functional wardrobe. It was very fun to shop for such a worthy cause. Can you imagine being the biggest kid in second grade, so you already stick out like a sore thumb, and on top of that being poor, and having nothing to wear!? I made sure the clothes were second grade cool, so she could wear them with pride! The school nurse picked up the bag of clothes from the church office. Inside I had placed a card for the little girl. The card generally said that "a little angel at her school told us about you, and the children at High Pointe wanted to help!" On the back I put the church address. Later that week, I was told the Church office received a beautiful home-made card from that school nurse, with heart-felt thanks for that little girl!
I know that the Children helping Children fund also helped four other children in this way. I loved finding out just how this fund helps children in our community!
