ChurchLeaders.com reported this shocking announcement:
Less than a year after his departure, Chan has returned.
SIMI VALLEY – Bestselling author and Pastor Francis Chan made a return to the platform last Sunday at Cornerstone, his former church in Simi Valley. He announced that he had “big news” to share with the church. “I’m coming back,” he said. It was on Sunday, April 18, 2010 that Chan announced to his congregation that he felt “called to resign” his role at the church. Now, less than a year later, Chan has returned.
Since Chan’s departure, Cornerstone had been relying solely on its children’s pastor Christian Burkhardt to carry the preaching load at its three weekend services. After more than 11 months of sermons filled with puppetry and flannel graph lessons, several members threatened to decrease their offerings, and one charter member even admitted he’d considered leaving the church altogether.
Last Sunday, there was obvious perplexity in the congregation as Chan entered the auditorium. The service proceeded as planned until Burkhardt began setting up the flannel graph board during the offertory. According to transcripts from a recording of the service and a report from an eyewitness attender, “Chan ascended the platform, put his arm around Burkhardt, smiled and said, ‘Christian, I’ve got good news for you and for the congregation. You get to go back to children’s ministry. I know these adults have little appreciation for God’s ability to speak through puppets. But the good news for the congregation is they get me.'”
