On Sunday, we had an "Easter Eggstravaganza." We invited the community to join us for an Easter egg hunt, a meal, a petting zoo, and a bounce gym. We had a great turnout, with numerous people from the community. I met guests that our members had invited, and one woman from the McKinney paper advertisement.
Becki and I were able to engage guests in conversationa and invite them out to Easter and our new sermon series: "The Office: Spirituality at Work." We had our newly printed invite cards and posters on this series visible for them to see. We were able to get some contact information too, and we will mail out these invitations to those who attended.
Events can still bring people into a building where they can meet some of the Christian community, and hopefully this will translate into some wanting to worship with us or engage in Bible study or service.
I would say that events should not substitute for going out, but that they can still play a role in outreach. It may be, however, that an even more effective means of having events is to have a series of smaller neighborhood events. But what do you think?
What role should events play in a missional outreach stratgey?
