please read the link above as this is baptismal regeneration and it is NOT part of salvation.  Read the link for a more detailed biblical account of preaching one needs to be water baptized to be saved.  Salvation is thru faith...water baptism is a symbol of the salvation we already received.

When I read John 3:5 I realize that there are various viewpoints as to what "born again" means.  One thing that helped me to capture the meaning was to connect two scriptures in I Peter:  chap. 1:3 uses the phrase "given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead--- Peter connects the new birth to the resurrection of Christ;  then in chap. 3: 21 Peter writes "...baptism that now saves you also---not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God, it saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ".  Thus Peter links baptism and the new birth both through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  This should make it clear that the same writer, Peter, connected baptism to the new birth by the same resurrection.
