I am sympathetic to many of the critiques of "religion," which include making the primary emphasis about the institution, buildings, structure, etc., rather than Jesus and helping people. Of course, being "organized" is not a sin. Would we rather have "disorganized" religion? :) Still, there is a tendency for movements to "institutionalize," choking the life out of the movement.
It is interesting that the passage in James about "pure religion" is the only time the Christian faith is referred to as religion. And there it is re-cast in relational, people terms (taking care of widows and orphans). Religion is a word that carries a lot of baggage today. (I wonder if that is why my M.Div. alma matter, HUGSR, changed their name from Harding Univ. School of Religion to Harding School of Theology . . . .)
