How did you get started in prison ministry?

I started out in ministry by going down to the local jail and having Bible studies with inmates, sharing the gospel. I had a young preacher named Check Monan take me under his wing and encourage me…Continue

I was privileged to be the Pastor for the U.S. Citizens incarcerated in the La Mesa State Penitentiary in Tijuana, Mexico for two years. I am also currently registered as a Jail Minister with the San Diego Count Sheriff's Department.

I am currently the Missions Director for Living Way Church in Poway, California (San Diego County). We are now preparing a mission team for the Dominican Republic. One of our objectives is to teach Pastors and Church leaders a comprehensive Theological study in conjuction with Bethel Seminary. Another part of our trip will to be ministering inside La Victoria Prison, the largest prison in the Caribean. Inside La Victoria Prison are thirteen Christian Evangelical churches; all ran by inmates who have been trained and monitored by MOTE (Missions on the Edge) a Non-profit organization whose main calling is to spread the Word of God in and through the prisons of Latin America. Started in the La Mesa prison in Tihjuana, they are now in the Domican Republic and are planting roots in Puerto Rico, Panama, Nicaragua; just to name a few.

Dear friends... We are very fortunate in South Africa where we have complete freedom for the Gospel to be preached to the incarcerated.

Bill, unfortunately the prison system is becoming more of a money maker then truly rehabilitating the inmates. Thank you for your comments. In my ministry I'm in touch with the family members. If anyone has resources to assist families please feel free to inform me. Angel Wings Transportation is my company / ministry and I provide affordable means of transportation for love ones to visit those who are incarcerated. Bill I know that working with the prison ministry for the last 10 years you know the value of visitations!!

Halima:
It is good to know that you are active in Africa. Have you met Hillary Motsinger from Dallas, Texas. He is very active in helping Prison Ministries all over the world. He started New Life Behavior Ministries out of Dallas, Texas.

I have been in the Prison Ministry for 10 years in the Collin County Detention Center in McKinney, Texas. They presently house about 900 men and women. They are adding more buildings.

It seems that Texas Correction people are trying to deemphasize the religious aspect of the prison. The Chaplain is no longer called Chaplain. He is the Program Director. However, in our prison he is a Baptist who has a heart for allowing and promoting the Bible being emphasized. He does not allow baptizing to take place nor does he
want us to teach baptism as taught in the N.T. If we do it, it has to be on the sly. When I see someone who wants to be baptized, I encourage him to do so in the State prison where he would be going from here.

I have had the priviledge of being involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry here in South Africa for the last 9 years and I am just now also leading an Alpha course within our local prison in our City. Amongst others I have a passion for those who are incarcerated [Mat 25:36 I was in prison, and ye came unto me.]

Halima, do you know of some prison ministry websites? If so, you could add them in the "Text Box- Add Text" area above.
