Missional Small Groups/Communities - From Impersonal Outreach Events to Fun, Relational Parties and Gatherings

In this video, a pastor talks about how he was in charge of putting on church events that people were supposed to invite their friends to come to, such as a concert. He planned on 1000 and had only 80 come. Then he discovered that tons of people came out to a local restaurant each week to hear a band. Then he tells how he started having a cookout in his small group…

10 Ways to Help Your Members and Church Reach Out Through Facebook and Online Social Networking

My Doctor of Ministry work is in missional outreach. And a significant part of this paper is on the use of social networking to reach people for Christ, both the old fashioned, "real world" networking and online social networking. I want to address the latter in this post, though both are intertwined.

There are several elements to effectively using Facebook…

Are people more likely to serve others in a small group or on their own?

I am a big proponent of people being a light to the world in their individual, daily lives. One of the reasons for this is that people spend so much of their time out on their own. If we take people's daily lives out of the missional sphere, we have made the majority of their lives secular and missionless. And the fact is, that some people truly do have work travel schedules…

The Externally Focused Quest - Can reaching out to the community be hazardous to your career?

The past couple of weeks I have gone to the Exponential conference and the Pepperdine lectures. Both events were filled with speakers saying the same thing--that we are losing people to the world in droves, and that the church must wake up, stop being inward-focused, and become outward-focused or "missional."

On this subject, I was also reading last week The Externally Focused Quest: Becoming the Best Church for the Community by Eric Swanson and Rick Rusaw. In this…

Service is the Pathway to Impacting the Community and Kingdom Growth

If your church one day ceased to exist, what would people in the community say?

  • Good! I'm glad to get rid of those mean-spirited, difficult people; or
  • I didn't even know they existed; or
  • Oh no. What will we do? This church has meant everything to do this community!

When I first heard this question years ago, it struck me. Perhaps it was because most churches I was a part of growing up seemed to be little known in the community. …

How to grow your church 20% through Facebook & Online Social Networking

Yesterday, my wife and I and our two girls, Gina (10) and Emily (6), went to eat at Shogun's, a Japanese steak house in McKinney. Our kids love it there, as the chefs make the food right at your table and do all kinds of interesting little tricks, like burning an onion and making it a chu chu train.

As the chef was making our food, we talked with him about his…

Love those in the community by eating with them, praying with them, & letting them run service ministries - Missional Thought of the Day

You may recall some recent posts that I had on Tonya Fisher and Orlando (see picture above). Tonya was recently released from prison. She came through our clothes closet, and the church provided clothing and furniture for her. Orlando is a mechanic who is out of work. He recently came through our food pantry.

I could tell with both Tonya and Orlando that they had good hearts, and we prayed with them when they came…

Missional Indians ?

I had an interesting talk with a man from Loja, Ecuador yesterday. We were discussing, without him know it, Mdna (Missional DNA). Missional, in this sense is simply living in such a way as to help others, sending the Gospel and ourselves to their turf, and demonstrating a faith that actually does what it preaches. The psychological / social make up of the Ecuadorian’s does not lend it self to helping their own kind…

Inviting the Community into Our Fellowship - Family, Faith, and Friends

For the last two years at High Pointe, we have been actively seeking ways to serve and impact our community. This has involved many different types of service outreaches, from Habitat for Humanity to FriendSpeak to singing in the nursing home. Three of our biggest service outreaches have been our food pantry, which gave out 2000+ bags of groceries last year, our clothes closet, which clothed over 4400 families, and our outreach to Vega Elementary School, where we help mentor, clothe, feed, and… Continue

A Great Missional Outreach Seminar at Buckingham Rd. Church of Christ!

This Friday and Saturday we had a Missional Outreach Seminar, hosted by the Buckingham Rd. Church of Christ in Garland, Texas. Richard Blaisdell is the preacher--a great fellow. Ron and Linda Sportsman are at Buckingham Rd. Ron served as an elder with me at the Liberty Church of Christ, in Liberty, MO, where I was a minister for 6 years. With the help of wonderful people like Ron and…

High Pointe Carolers Bring Joy to Colonial Lodge Nursing Home!

Last Wednesday night, we did not have Bible classes at High Pointe. But the church still met. The church, of course, is present wherever two or three Christians are gathered in Christ's name.

A great group of singers from the High Pointe Church of Christ met at the Colonial Lodge, a nursing home in McKinney, to sing Christmas carols and bring a little Christmas joy to the residents and workers. It was a good mix of young and older Christians, with whole families… Continue

How will the Internet change how we do evangelism?

As a lot of you know, I just took my D.Min. class at Fuller on Ministry in the Postmodern Matrix. For my paper for this class, I'm going to be writing about how the internet will change how we do ministry and outreach, particularly through social networking sites.

In just the last two years, how people use the internet has dramatically changed with the rise of sites like Facebook. Today, people have a very public persona on these sites, giving… Continue
