Being Missional Flows Out of Thanksgiving

Well, I just watched the first half of the Cowboys-Dolphins game, and it was pretty nondescript. Not exciting enough to keep me fully awake after a big Thanksgiving meal. Pretty boring, and a bit irritating as Tony Romo once again threw two terrible interceptions. I just consoled myself with another piece of pecan pie. The half ended at 10-6, Cowboys.

If we are going to be missional, it helps to be a thankful people. Going back to the original call of Abraham, we are blessed so that we can be a blessing to others. But if we fail to recognize or be thankful for God's blessing, we will likely fail in blessing others.

Our lives are often like a 10-6 game. We are ahead, but we are dissatisfied. We think about what else we want, not just materially, but in other areas of our lives. We wish that we had more respect, or a higher position, or that our kids did better in school or sports, or that our spouses would do this or that. We wish that we had a better preacher, better elders, better ministries. We wish that we had done more with our lives, which somehow seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

Not very inspiring, is it? If we are dissatisfied, then what do we have to share with people? We probably are too consumed with our own unhappiness to reach out to others, or if we do reach out, then we will likely be ineffective due to the hidden, sour look on our souls.

We have so much to be thankful for. More food than most of us can or should eat. Children. Spouses. Friends. Fellow Christians. Our salvation. Jesus Christ.

So you want to be more missional? Try counting your blessings. Try being thankful. And you will find that you have a lot to share with the world. You will want to bless others because you realize that you have been so blessed--and that God gives us these blessings to bless others. Note this psalm:

Psalm 100

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
 2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
   come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the LORD is God.
   It is he who made us, and we are his;
   we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
   and his courts with praise;
   give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
   his faithfulness continues through all generations.

What are you thankful for? How can this thankfulness help you reach out to others and share Jesus with them?

Cindy, that is great to hear! Jesus is who it is all about. Glad that you are seeing that at Southern Crescent and in Todd's preaching.

It really does hit home.  It also goes along with the truths that Todd has been preaching.  I've been to a church with programs in the past and that is definitely not where it is at.  We have definitely seen Jesus at Southern Crescent.  It is truly amazing!

Falcons needed the Pokes to lose, so I'm bummed.

Michael, God's people are indeed a blessing to us. As with you, I don't know how people get through difficult times without God's family. When we go through difficult times, we now have a story to tell of how God and his people have helped us through this.

The Cowboys just won 20-19. I'm thankful for that too!

I am thankful for many things, most of all Jesus Christ.  But for now, I thank God for my Christian Family at the church I attend.  I would not have made it through the past two years without close, faithful, caring, praying Christian Friends.  I don't know how anyone, without what I have been blessed with, makes it through all the trials without giving up.  God knew we needed the Church, thank you Jesus for making it a reality.  Thank you Southern Crescent for being my family.
