Will Mother's Day be the next 'big day' at your church? Or does your church empty as congregants head out of town to visit family elsewhere? Whether the gathering is larger or smaller, it is likely that there may be some visiting son or daughter who seldom makes her way to church. It's a hard sell for sure - they're likely ONLY there to honor their mother. Some may even be tuned out, just enduring the hour so they can get on with the visit with their mom. But it seems to me that we are called upon to attempt to reach the heart - even if the heart didn't come to be reached.

So, do you have any plans for Mother's Day?

Do you preach a "mothers day" type sermon? Is it a sermon that glories the beauty of motherhood ... or decries the loss of motherhood in our culture?

No matter what happens... we all know the old saying and the truth behind it... 'the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world'.

thanks brother .the bible said we must respect our mother, both old and new testament .Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. Eph6:1-3
Mother's Day is a good time to insert experiential elements in the sermon/worship. We plan videod interviews with various people concerning the importance, impact, characteristics of their mothers. These will be shared--the focus of our Kids' Time will be on a similar qusstion, and we will use all three of our preachers in some roles to address the topic--thus providing variety and movement.
Thanks Bob... sounds like a great service to me!

You're welcome Eric. We must never leave or forget what the Bible says about our parents.

I looked it up. Mother's Day is May 9, 2010!

So...is Mother's Day a missional opportunity?
It could be...but I think that would be contextual. I do not think it is as big as easter or christmas ... but it certainly has potential to produce some unexpected family visitors.
