Why do we check our cell phones, Facebook, Twitter, and email so often? Part of it may be narcissism and self-absorption. But there is also growing evidence that there is a chemical reward for checking these devices and information sources. Read Why Information is It's Own Reward.

The constant little adrenaline hits that come from "you've got mail," a Twitter retweet, a Facebook post, etc., however, come with a price. First, constantly checking your cell phone in other people's presence is incredibly rude. Read "Stop Being Rude and Put Your Cell Phone Away." If you are doing this, you need help. And I say this as one who knows.

Second, for those seeking to reduce stress, anxiety, or depression, these constant adrenaline hits are not helpful. They keep us "revved" up and cause our hearts to race faster.

If you feel that you have either of these problems, here are a few suggestions.
  • Go on a one or two week cell phone/computer/media fast. I took a two week fast when I took my D.Min. class with Dallas Willard on Spirituality and Ministry. It showed me that I could exercise self control and resist constantly checking these devices.
  • Have a set time you check devices. Check email, for instance, at 10 AM and 4 AM. If you have trouble sleeping, do not check anything anytime close to bedtime-especially anything that you know might be upsetting. Let it wait until the morning, when you are better able to deal with whatever comes.
  • Say, "Excuse me," or ask permission if you do have to check a device when in someone else's presence.
  • When an impulse comes, say a prayer instead.
Of course, none of this applies to Missional Outreach Network--check it as much as you want! :)

What thoughts or suggestions do you have on checking these devices/sites?

A very nice article! Good one James
Glad you found it helpful, LRon!
I asked myself this question just last week.....do I really want one of those IPhones or Droids in my life? That's all I see around me each day are people attached to a gadget, like robots answering every beck and "call"!! Drexting and not paying attention really irritate me! I have a simple AT&T LG phone with texting & internet available but no other bells & whistles. As it stands, I check all my emails from my home PC (so archaic these days) mostly once a day, sometimes twice, but even then I don't like to be tied or subject to it! I do enjoy Facebook, KickStarter, M.O.N. to name a few, and I do have to set a time limit on these sites daily! :P So, why would I want to have one of these "IThingys" attached to me constantly?! What ever happened to, "Hey, give me a call and we can talk!" Did it go out with personal letter writing? I enjoy my freedom & slower pace and intend to keep it as long as I'm able to!! :D
Chris, I understand. I alternate between loving and hating technology. Mostly loving, I suppose. I take a lot of joy from this website, being able to share ideas and interact with people around the US and the world. I can call my friends anytime.

But I sometimes long for a simpler, slower paced time. I particularly dread checking my email many times, because this is a bad way to get bad news or deal with controversial issues.

Like most things, technology is neither good nor bad--it is how you use it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Don't you just love the above picture? The woman is glaring at the guy for talking on his phone in front of her!
