Moderator....that's the word. And I do think the possibility of anonymity (possible through blogging) is great. I had not even considered that.

The kids DO want to be challenged....they hunger for that and if the challenges are stimulating enough...they will respond. This will take someone who is very skilled to be a moderator. Someone who can serve as both a moderator and mentor. And of course, there can be more than one. But whoever moderates needs to be in tune with issues that are relevant to todays' teens and also be skilled enough to provide food for thought and uplifting messages.

I'm trying to think of someone..... The richland hills church has a young adult site I saw the other day. They did a nice job of writing some stuff about the elections and provide a christian perspective no matter what the outcome. The link is if anyone wants to take a look.

Bruce and Rebecca, I think that both of you have come up with some great ideas. There probably is a place for Facebook types of sites as well as something a bit more overtly Christian (like this site) and a place where they can deal with some issues anonymously. Obviously, we would prefer to have people deal with these kind of issues with someone who knows them that they can go to; however, this may not always be possible.

So as parents of teens, do you think that they would be responsive to a daily thought kind of thing and discussion forums on issues that they are facing? Which should go on which kind of site?

Whatever is done with the teens...it does need to be structured. What i mean is that....if we just leave it up to them to use facebook or myspace...then we've really done nothing because that is already true.

If we have some sort of structured (I guess I mean official or church sanctioned) presence on Facebook or MySpace, then I think it will be more successful. The teens, college and young adults would appreciate thoughtful interaction where they can respond by computer, text or phone. Also...it would open the door for extending to outsiders...friends can be invited. Also, having some sort of control over the group...it will help keep things guided on appropriate paths. I'm not talking about stifling them, but guidance is oftentimes needed.

I'm not so sure that this group here (on Missional Outreach) would work as successfully as facebook or myspace. Facebook and myspace is where they already are and their friends are already there. The kids LOVE to join groups and stuff on Facebook/MySpace and the better the group is...the more successful it will be.

Things can be blogged down from the sites....I know that the teens were excited about the elections. This could have been a good time to provide ministering, discussion and comments. I like it because I could be a lurker which other parents may like too.

The kids may grow a lot from this. It's amazing how much you learn when you start writing what you think....or what you thought you thunk! :) Writing helps bring clarity.

Kevin, speaking of RSS, could you post an explanation of this feature (in general and for this site) in the "Technical Tips" forum? We could use you and others contributing tips like this for the non-technical crowd. And maybe the technical crowd can learn from one another too.

Kevin, an education process for adults on this kind of technology is much needed. RSS--what is that? That is the reaction of a great number of non-technical people.

Maybe be could have a tech training class/session, etc. It would be a great way to bring older and younger together too.

Good question. Where to engage the teens? There is something to be said about going to where they already are. There is so much that adults can learn from teens and their fresh ideas. Getting a majority of our adults to venture into the world of Facebook and MySpace may be tougher than getting the teens to use the church site or this site. Many people do not know about RSS feeds and how useful they can be to be updated when changes happen on a site without much work.

Rebecca, I'll add some discussion on "video of sermons."

Certainly, we need to engage teens. Should this be on this site, or on our church's website--or through their own sites that they are already using, like MySpace and Facebook?

I like Rebecca's ideas. I don't see any teenagers on this site. Should we approach David Moses about adding a group for the teenagers and then talk with them about using that to communicate with each other like they use MySpace to get their ideas flowing? Talking with James yesterday we discussed some things that are done on other sites that draws participation. I will be looking in to those things to see how we can add them to our site.

I know you have already considered this, but having video would be nice.

Also...for building something for young people (college/young adult). Maybe come up with an identity for them...make a domain name/page that can have their stuff on it. We are living in an area where this group is becoming more prevalent.
