Is Evangelism About This World or the Next, Social Action or Soul Saving?

I am doing a bit of blogging through Michael Frost's bookThe Road to Missional. In this book he revives the long running debate about whether or not mission and/or evangelism includes social action…

Passionately Sharing Jesus

This Sunday I am speaking on "Passionately Sharing Jesus," which is part of our vision statement. We can "share Jesus," but what does it mean to "passionately" share Jesus?

Passionately sharing Jesus implies that there are other ways that Jesus can be shared. Jesus can be shared out of duty, out of obligation, or out of response to a command. These are not bad motivations. We have been commanded by Jesus to "go, make disciples" (Mt. 28:18-20). But is there…

Sharing the Gospel--It is more than words

Above is a video from John Dickson, author of The Best Kept Secret of Christian Mission. In this video and book, Dickson talks about how sharing the gospel involves more than words and "presentations."…

People sharing faith: Spiritual conversation openers

In order to be able to share our faith, we have to be able to talk about our faith. Ironically, however, the best way to share our faith is to ask others about their faith and spiritual journey--and listen! Jesus was a master at this, as shown in his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4.

I found the following spiritual conversation starter questions at http://home.snu.edu/~HCULBERT/assess.htm. See what…

The Gospel Spreads through Social Networking - Lessons from Jesus & the Early Church

I am not opposed to "advertising" for the church, particularly if it is tied to offering to meet a felt need in the community. But the most powerful form of "advertising" is the sharing of the gospel person to person through social networking. Today, obviously, we have tremendous online social networking tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) that we need to utilize to reach the lost. But even without these tools, the early church grew from a small band of disciples in the first century…

Why the Gospel Should Be Shared as a Narrative (Story), not as Propositions

The Story of Redemption is an eight part evangelistic Bible study that I have written to help lead unchurched, postmodern people to faith in Jesus Christ. This story is largely narrative in form, which is appropriate for many reasons. [1]

  • Humans are storytellers, and they make sense of their lives through narrative.[2]
  • Most of Scripture is narrative, and the Christian faith was presented…

Missional Thought of the Day - We must learn the "Celtic Way of Evangelism" to reach people today

You have probably heard of St. Patrick of Ireland and St. Patrick's Day. But Patrick is a lot more important than the color green. He and his "Celtic Way of Evangelism" are very instructive for us in how to be missional today.

Patrick was English, and when he was 16, Celtic pirates captured him and carried him over to Ireland…

Missional Thought of the Day - Reaching Out with Facebook (2) - It's about relationships!

You can use Facebook as a broadcast medium, shouting out messages about your church, telling them about upcoming activities, etc.

But in reality, these are somewhat limited in value. I am reminded of what my Twitter friend, @MarketerMikeE said on this. Take a look at your last 20 tweets. Would you want to follow you? Does it scream me, me, me? Or are you being truly helpful to others. The same is true for Facebook.

You see, what people are really looking for in a… Continue

Missional Thought of the Day - Reach More People Through Small Group Evangelistic Bible Studies

Last Wednesday night we started a new Story of Redemption small group study in Melissa, TX. I used to do most of these studies with just the seeker and their Christian friend who introduced them to us. And the conversion rate from this has been about 90%. It is still a good way to share faith.

However, I have discovered the multiplying power of sharing the…

Missional Thought of the Day - Missional People Should Not Be Allergic to Evangelism!

In his new book, Planting Churches in the 21st Century, Stuart Murray begins by talking about the move that some have tried to make away from the term "church planting," as for some, this has seemed too human planned and even imperialistic. This came from the observation that…

Missional Thought of the Day - My encounter with a Jehovah's Witness & Doorknocking

Just now I was sitting down, eating a bowl of cereal, when the doorbell rang. I got up to see who it was, and I saw a very formally dressed family. Interesting, it was a white wife and an African-American husband, with a cute little 6 or 7 year old son. I could read the word "Watchtower" on the top of one of their materials, and so I knew that they were Jehovah's Witnesses.…

Inviting the Community into Our Fellowship - Family, Faith, and Friends

For the last two years at High Pointe, we have been actively seeking ways to serve and impact our community. This has involved many different types of service outreaches, from Habitat for Humanity to FriendSpeak to singing in the nursing home. Three of our biggest service outreaches have been our food pantry, which gave out 2000+ bags of groceries last year, our clothes closet, which clothed over 4400 families, and our outreach to Vega Elementary School, where we help mentor, clothe, feed, and… Continue

If we are not discipling others, we fail to grow

T oday I had another Bible study with--I'll call him Paul Smith. Paul was baptized into Christ 4-5 months ago. Paul had been angry with God for years because he and his wife had suffered two miscarriages and had not been able to have children. Paul came to us because he and his wife at the time were headed towards divorce. This divorce is now finalized, despite his…

Spreading the Gospel Through Relationships - Will Koen Baptized!

Sunday was a great day! Will Koen was baptized into Christ at 9 AM. Will was brought to Christ by his girlfriend, Tiffany Schuchert, who was baptized herself earlier this year. Tiffany met Will at the Collin County Communnity College about six months ago. Tiffany is a bright, bubbly young woman whom I always believed would reach many people for Christ through her open, outgoing personality and sincere faith.

We have been studying with Tiffany, Will, and some other… Continue

LinkedIn

LinkedIn_logo_1 LinkedIn is a social networking site for the business community. It boasts more than 45 million users worldwide. If you are a business professional, you have probably had some experience with LinkedIn already. If not, it would be beneficial for you to learn more about it. I liken it to Monster.com meets social media. It is encouraging to note that the Christian community… Continue

The Future of Social Media

In a post today, Wes Woodell, on his blog West Coast Witness, asked the question(s) "Is Social Media Just a Fad? Will Facebook Fade Like Vanilla Ice?" Included in that post was a YouTube video from Socialnomics (Watch Below). Both reaffirm the reality that social media has parked its massive rear… Continue
