Missional Thought of the Day - The Suburban Brokenness of Living Vicariously Through One's Kids

Suburbia is centered around safety, security, and kids, among other things. People move to the suburbs so that their kids can have a better life, get away from the drugs and violence of the city.

Of course, this fails to recognize that there are all kinds of drugs in suburbs, because that is where the money is. And if violence is lower in the suburbs, materialism is rampant there and a far greater threat to the soul.

But the love of kids, while often genuine,… Continue

Being missional goes far beyond ministries and programs. It is about a way of life for individuals, as well as what the church does together. And yet, to tell people to go out "be missional" may just create guilt, as most people do not know how to live this out.

This is why helping people develop "missional rhythms" or a set of…

Missional Thought of the Day - The Great Commission Must Be Interpreted Missionally

The Great Commission as it is found in Matthew 28:19-20 is this: "Therefore go and m
ake disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Mt.…

Missional Thought of the Day - Reach More People Through Small Group Evangelistic Bible Studies

Last Wednesday night we started a new Story of Redemption small group study in Melissa, TX. I used to do most of these studies with just the seeker and their Christian friend who introduced them to us. And the conversion rate from this has been about 90%. It is still a good way to share faith.

However, I have discovered the multiplying power of sharing the…

Finding the Person of Peace

Noticing the Person of Peace

I’ve started meeting with a person who seems to be a “person of peace.”

Even though he’s only been in this country for a relatively short amount of time, he has several people approaching him with lots of spiritual questions that he can’t answer.

He wants to learn how to answer their questions with gentleness and respect.

Put another way he’d like to know… Continue

HANDS&FEET WORKSHOP

I thought that this would be an appropriate place to share where God has been leading us lately. We are strongly convinced that we need to share our story and knowledge with other churches around the country. Our fellowship began over ten years ago with a belief that church was supposed to be different. Instead of focusing out ourselves the…

Hope Rises out of Devastation

Over the course of the next few weeks I hope to write some thoughts about the adventure I have been on since Friday, September 3, 2010. My hope is what I write will eventually become a book about my great, great grandfather and how his legacy can spark new hope in the lives of those who read about his life.

Installment 1

September 3, 2010 was going to be a Friday just like very other Friday until I realized one important factor. I poured coffee into my favorite coffee cup, one that I… Continue

Can a pastor find time for evangelism?

In this video for an upcoming video course, I interview pastor Richard White, a man that I highly respect.

He is a busy pastor, and in this video he's grumbling to God about not having enough time to model personal evangelism.

Watch this video to find out what happened next.

Against The Wall

All of us enjoy a good story, but what is it that makes a story good? I suppose that's an entirely subjective question, one that if I knew the answer to I'd be writing screenplays or books instead of this blog!

But I don't think I'd be too far off the mark if I were to say that most

people are drawn to a couple of specific things. Most people love

hero's. They inspire us with their courage and their "never say die"

attitude. It's their charisma, confidence, leadership and…

The "Real" Jesus

When asked about his taste in music, Ray Charles was once quoted as saying,

"There's only two kinds of music, those kinds being good and bad"

and that's a statement to which I wholeheartedly agree!

I'm not a big fan of most Christian music,…

The True Vine!

It's quite amazing to me how much insight the seemingly insignificant objects and circumstances of our lives have to offer us if we'll just stop for a moment to look and listen. Like word pictures on a life size

screen they patiently wait for us to pull focus on them to impart to us

their message.

Last week I…

I Had No Business

If ever I were to write my life story, this would probably end up being the title.

What does "that" really mean?

That my life has been characterized by my feeling that I'm a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

That as a square peg in a land full of round holes you will do…

Missional Thought of the Day - We Can Achieve Nothing Without God

in his new book, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From the American Dream, author David Platt exposes many ways in which the American dream and American ideals are contrary to the gospel. One American myth that he exposes is that we can do anything on our own through hard work and American ingenuity. He…

Volunteer Tutoring Program

"What would it mean to see a child struggling with math end the school year receiving A’s? What length would you go to help a son or daughter who doesn’t like to read develop a love of books? Over the years we have seen all of this and more at our Helping Hands Volunteer Tutoring program."

This comes from the intro to an article in the local…

The Secret and has Real Power

A few years ago I received a copy of a book called, "The Secret" and I read it and as soon as I was done with it I dropped it into my trash can. Usually when I read a book and it does not appeal to me I put it in a garage sale or take it to the used book store but this one I placed it where it belongs.

You might be wondering why I am saying this and I hope to answer that for you in this post.

From the official website of The Secret:

One spring day towards the… Continue
