The Scandal of the Grace of Jesus

Grace.

Giving people good things when they do not deserve. Giving people mercy instead of justice. Letting murderers, thieves, and liars into the kingdom of heaven. Forgiving the same act over and over.

It is scandalous.

If we were to run our court system, our judicial system, like God does, we would not put up with it. We want liars to…

What Christians can learn from Newt Gingrich, Paula Deen, and Capt. Francesco Schettino

The big political story this week was presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his tax returns, including whether or not he would release them, his tax rate of 15% or less, and some of the offshore tax shelters and loopholes that he used in managing his money.

But this story was blown off the front page by Newt Gingrich's second wife. It is well known…

Sam Trevino Baptism, Alfonso DeLuna Story of Redemption Small Group Study

Sam Trevino was baptized on September 25, 2011. There have been so many baptisms lately that it has been hard to write up all of their stories, so sorry for the delay. However, this story continues to develop.

Sam has been friends with Alfonso DeLuna, a current High Pointe member, for years. When they knew each other years ago,…

Jesus - the Second Most Popular Person in America

At first it would be tempting…

Being Missional Flows Out of Thanksgiving

Well, I just watched the first half of the Cowboys-Dolphins game, and it was pretty nondescript. Not exciting enough to keep me fully awake after a big Thanksgiving meal. Pretty boring, and a bit irritating as Tony Romo once again threw two terrible interceptions. I just consoled myself with another piece of pecan pie. The half ended at 10-6, Cowboys.

If we…

Missional Small Groups/Communities - From Impersonal Outreach Events to Fun, Relational Parties and Gatherings

In this video, a pastor talks about how he was in charge of putting on church events that people were supposed to invite their friends to come to, such as a concert. He planned on 1000 and had only 80 come. Then he discovered that tons of people came out to a local restaurant each week to hear a band. Then he tells how he started having a cookout in his small group…

10 Ways to Help Your Members and Church Reach Out Through Facebook and Online Social Networking

My Doctor of Ministry work is in missional outreach. And a significant part of this paper is on the use of social networking to reach people for Christ, both the old fashioned, "real world" networking and online social networking. I want to address the latter in this post, though both are intertwined.

There are several elements to effectively using Facebook…

My "God Encounter" with My Hair Cutter at Sports Clips

This afternoon I went and got my hair cut at Sports Clips. This is where I usually go. Hey, I'm a guy, and if you have to wait around and take the time to get your hair cut, you might as well be able to watch ESPN when you go. So, kudos to them for winning the niche marketing game.

I usually try to go to frequent many of the same places, such as hair cutting…

Do These 4 Things Before/During/After a Funeral to Show Love and Reach People for Christ

If you were to ask me which is gifts are stronger for me--evangelism or pastoral care--I would say the former. Still, I visit a lot of people in the hospital, counsel people, and seek to be there for them when loved ones pass away.

I actually very much want to minister to people when they have lost loved ones, and I am always glad to be able to perform a funeral. I… Continue

How to Reach Our Pragmatic, Relativistic Culture for Christ

We live in a pragmatic, impatient society. There are a lot of theories about a lot of different things out there. But who knows if they are true? Science was recently the ultimate authority. But look at the recent scandal over global warming, where scientists were cooking the books.

Whatever your view on climate change, it makes you wonder what other data is…

How do you reach an increasingly unchurched, post-religious, post-Christian culture with the gospel?

Churches across the United States are shrinking. In fact, every single fellowship, including Churches of Christ, is on the decline. It used to be said that healthy churches grow. In today's climate, with a shrinking percentage of the population being Christian, healthy churches may not necessarily grow. They may shrink due to the overall decline of Christianity in our culture.

It will take more than just church health to grow churches. It will take more than…
